Professoressa Ordinaria di Tecnica delle Costruzioni con oltre trent’anni di attività accademica all’Università del Salento, dal 1° novembre 2025 Maria Antonietta Aiello è Rettrice dell’Ateneo per il sessennio 2025-2031, prima donna alla guida di un’università pugliese. Si laurea in Ingegneria Civile presso l’Università della Calabria nel 1991, vince una borsa annuale di perfezionamento all’estero presso l’Università di Guildford (UK) e consegue nel 1998 il Dottorato in “Materiali Compositi per le Costruzioni Civili” all’Università di Lecce. È stata Prorettrice Vicaria dal 2021 e Delegata del Rettore al Patrimonio Edilizio e Sicurezza dal 2019, coordinando comitati e gruppi di lavoro in ambiti come qualità, sostenibilità, sicurezza e pari opportunità. Ha presieduto il Consiglio Didattico di Ingegneria Civile e fatto parte della Giunta del Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell’Innovazione e del CTS del Servizio Orientamento. Dirige il Laboratorio di Tecnica delle Costruzioni e il SEERS Lab (Structural and Earthquake Engineering for Resilient and Sustainable Constructions). È membro del Collegio dei Docenti dei Dottorati in “Ingegneria dei Materiali, Strutture e Nanotecnologia” e “Earth Processes and Management of Resources and Risks”. Responsabile di numerosi progetti di ricerca, è autrice di oltre 350 pubblicazioni scientifiche e figura tra i World’s Top 2% Scientists 2024 e 2025. È componente del Consiglio Superiore dei Lavori Pubblici e dal 2019 Chair del Comitato Tecnico RILEM IMC. Per il suo impegno scientifico e culturale ha ricevuto diversi riconoscimenti, tra cui il Premio Edoardo Kramer dell’Istituto Lombardo nel 2025.

Full Professor of Construction Engineering with over thirty years of academic experience at the University of Salento, Maria Antonietta Aiello has been Rector of the University since November 1, 2025, for the six-year period 2025-2031, the first woman to lead a university in Puglia. She graduated in Civil Engineering from the University of Calabria in 1991, won an annual scholarship to study abroad at the University of Guildford (UK), and in 1998 obtained her PhD in “Composite Materials for Civil Construction” from the University of Lecce. She has been Vice-Rector since 2021 and Rector’s Delegate for Building Heritage and Safety since 2019, coordinating committees and working groups in areas such as quality, sustainability, safety, and equal opportunities. She has chaired the Civil Engineering Teaching Council and been a member of the Innovation Engineering Department Council and the CTS Guidance Service. She directs the Construction Technology Laboratory and the SEERS Lab (Structural and Earthquake Engineering for Resilient and Sustainable Constructions). She is a member of the Faculty Board for Doctorates in ‘Materials, Structures and Nanotechnology Engineering’ and ‘Earth Processes and Management of Resources and Risks’. Responsible for numerous research projects, she is the author of over 350 scientific publications and ranks among the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2024 and 2025. She is a member of the Higher Council of Public Works and, since 2019, Chair of the RILEM IMC Technical Committee. She has received several awards for her scientific and cultural commitment, including the Edoardo Kramer Prize from the Lombard Institute in 2025.
