Meri Calvelli
Meri Calvelli è una cooperante italiana attiva da oltre vent’anni nella Striscia di Gaza, dove dirige il Centro Italo-palestinese di Scambio Culturale VIK, intitolato all’attivista Vittorio Arrigoni. Il suo impegno si è concretizzato nella promozione di progetti educativi, culturali e sportivi rivolti a giovani e donne palestinesi, favorendo scambi bilaterali tra Italia e Palestina. Sotto la sua direzione, il Centro ha ospitato iniziative come Gaza FREEstyle, che ha portato attività circensi e uno skatepark nel cuore di Gaza. Calvelli ha collaborato con la ONG italiana ACS e ha coordinato numerosi programmi di cooperazione, contribuendo alla formazione di centinaia di giovani. Dopo il 7 ottobre 2023, l’accesso alla Striscia è stato interrotto, costringendola a proseguire la sua attività dalla Cisgiordania, dove continua a testimoniare la crisi umanitaria e a promuovere il dialogo interculturale. Il suo lavoro si distingue per la difesa dei diritti umani, la libertà di stampa e la costruzione di ponti tra società civili.
Meri Calvelli is an Italian aid worker who has been active for over twenty years in the Gaza Strip, where she serves as Director of the Italian-Palestinian Cultural Exchange Center VIK, named after activist Vittorio Arrigoni. Her commitment has taken shape through the promotion of educational, cultural, and sports projects aimed at Palestinian youth and women, fostering bilateral exchanges between Italy and Palestine. Under her leadership, the Center has hosted initiatives such as Gaza FREEstyle, which brought circus activities and a skatepark to the heart of Gaza. Calvelli has collaborated with the Italian NGO ACS and coordinated numerous cooperation programs, contributing to the training of hundreds of young people. Since October 7, 2023, access to the Strip has been blocked, forcing her to continue her work from the West Bank, where she remains a witness to the humanitarian crisis and actively promotes intercultural dialogue. Her work is distinguished by a strong commitment to human rights, freedom of the press, and building bridges between civil societies.
